Just a thought

without comments

I was just reminiscing with an old friend, another photographer, on how when we began our careers we felt busy doing two or three jobs a month. Now four a week is normal, I love it!

I have put a lot of standard processes into place to allow us to work this often…. streamlining how we manage our equipment and crew needs, having an iron clad digital workflow, getting our production down to an efficient science.  Even the office work and accounting needs to be really well organized for our business to run back to back jobs like this.

Being a photographer is an interesting proposition…. you must have a perfect right brain / left brain balance to be successful.  You have to be highly creative to produce exciting imagery, but at the same time you must be super organized and have a good head for business.  There are photographers that lean a little more to one side or another, but I can’t think of any successful photographers in the commercial world who only have one side of this equation going for them.

Rouge Magazine Cover

I’m so lucky and thankful to be as busy as I am, but the one drawback is that I haven’t had much time to shoot fashion editorial.  Fashion photographers use editorial to promote their work, and it also gives us a creative outlet that we don’t always get with the paid advertising and catalog jobs.  But because most magazines pay very little, or usually nothing at all, editorial projects tend to go on the backburner when we are overwhelmed with well paying advertising and catalog work.  That has been the case for me for far too long…. but I do try to sneak editorial projects in here and there.  My last editorial shoot finally got published in Rouge Magazine.  I haven’t actually gotten a copy yet, but wanted to share this cover image I was able to find online.

I’ll be taking some time out to shoot some more editorial projects in the coming months, and I will be sure to share those with you here too.

Forever 21 Japan

without comments

The crew from Forever 21 just came back from a trip to Japan to design the windows of their new store.  They took this snapshot of the front of the building with a couple billboard size images from a shoot I did with them.  It’s always fun to see my pictures blown up this big!   Now I just need to come up with an excuse for a trip to Tokyo so I can see it in person.
